Instant Replay Video Review in 2014

Bud Selig announced today there will be video review of more plays and ability for managers to challenge an umps call in 2014. This will still be voted on by owners in November.

How it is proposed to work

  • Managers will get 1 Challenge from the 1st to the 6th inning.
  • Managers will get 2 Challenges from the 7th until the end of the game.
  • Managers will file the challenge with the crew chief or home plate ump.
  • Managers can only challenge reviewable plays: 89 percent of all total plays.
  • Managers can still argue non-reviewable plays: balls, strikes, hit by pitch, ruling of a dead ball.
  • Managers do not keep challenges not used in the 1st through 6th
  • Managers keep the their 1 challenge if the win it.
  • Challenges will be reviewed and ruled by MLB headquarters in New York City, not umps.
  • The current home run challenge is included.
  • Challenges will take 1 minute and 15 seconds

Elvis being traded? or How do Waivers Work?

This morning it was announced that Elvis Andrus had cleared waivers. After the announcement, there was a short twitter fallout wondering if the Rangers' intention was to trade Elvis or if he had been traded. Prior to this season, Elvis signed a extension to his contract for $120 million over 8 years with an opt-out clause in 2018 & 2019. Elvis has not been traded and is very unlikely to be traded, but this is a great time to explain the waivers process.

Things to know about trades and waivers:

After the trade deadline of July 31st, teams have to place a player on waivers for that player to be trade eligible. Most player's who are able to be traded are placed on revocable waivers at this time.
The reason for this is to be able to accept trade offers for a player past the trade deadline. The team could have zero intention in trading the player, but still place on waivers to be able to listen to offers.

What would have happened next if a team or teams had claimed Elvis on waivers:
  •  In the case of multiple teams claiming a player, the team with the worse record in the player's current league gets to claim him.
  • If claimed, the Rangers can:
    • Work a trade within 2 business days
    • Rescind the request and keep Elvis (cancels the waiver)
    • Do not respond and simply allow the team who claimed him to take over his current contract and acquire him on their roster.
  • If claimed, and the Rangers rescind the request, the Rangers would not be able to place him on waivers again without it being irrevocable and any team claiming him would acquire him.
  • If not claimed within 3 days, he would clear waivers and could be traded or released as the Rangers saw fit.

With all of that said, it means nothing. Before the trade deadline of July 31st, the front office can negotiate any trade with any team without having to place the player on waivers first.
The Rangers are simply doing what we see occur with most other players under contract past the trade deadline. It just allows the Rangers to be able to listen to offers, that they would not be able to if players were not placed on waivers.

Rangers tied for First!!!

Tied for first!!! Both A's and Rangers are off today. Rangers will start a series tomorrow against the Astros in Houston, and the A's will begin an away series vs the Blue Jays.

We are all tied up behind the Rays who are a few games ahead in the wild card standings. The Rangers recent 9-1 run made of the last 10 games have propelled them back in the hunt. It's still early, but it's great to see the offense come to life. I have hope it will continue and allow us to see the post-season.

Goodbye Nelly Cruz

Cruz was suspended today for 50 games by MLB. His suspension runs through then end of the season, with the potential to play in the postseason.

The Rangers front office reported that they found out last night that he would not appeal the impending suspension.

Today, Cruz accepted that suspension and issued this statement:

Cruz plans to make no further media contacts through the day.

The Rangers plan to bring up Engel Beltre & Joey Butler, will have to designate a player to make room.

Cruz: Should I stay or Should I go?

Today, we will learn the fate of Nelson Cruz by Major League Baseball for his involvement with biogenesis. Cruz has yet to announce whether he plans to stay and continue playing for the Rangers by appealing the decision.
He is in the middle of a tough decision, because he is a free agent next year. Serving the suspension in 2013, would leave him a free agent in 2014 with no further suspension to serve and could bring more money and opportunity in the long run. If he appealed his decision, he would continue playing during the appeal process, but would serve his suspension, potentially near the end of this year and into next year.
Cruz could potentially be back for the post season, if the Rangers made it to the post season and he served his suspension now. Cruz has been a major producer in the Rangers Lineup, and filling his shoes in the meantime would be a huge feat:

G PA H HR R RBI SB AVG OBP SLG
Nelson Cruz 108 452 110 27 49 76 5 0.269 0.330 0.511

Nelly leads the Rangers in Home Runs, RBI, and has the 3rd highest slugging percentage. He has also has the 3rd most games played and plate appearances, so he has definitely been a major part of the lineup.

The team seems to have a few backup plans if Nelly does not appeal, and he is out for the season. Those have yet to be shared and the hope is that he will stay.

"Tomorrow it's going to happen," Cruz said before Sunday's game against Oakland. "Whatever my decision is going to be ... I haven't decided what it's going to be."

Signing Cruz now for an extension would allow him to appeal now and not have to worry about what would happen in 2014. The problem with that is the amount of money it would take, Cruz would become an older player during the time you signed him, and he currently is making $10.5 million over 2 years (2012-2013). It would be a costly and risky investment.

We will just have to wait for later today to see the outcome.

Profar knocked down by Balfour

In Saturday's game, Profar was brushed back twice with 93 mph fastballs that were up and in. This is believed to be because his bat hit Vogt on the hand in the 2nd & the head on a swing in the 6th.

"I can't believe he hit me that far back,'' Vogt said. "I'm not that close to the plate. I moved back after he got me the first time, and he still got me pretty good.''

The second and final brushback, had Profar swinging with a defensive swing. He unfortunately struck out in a rough looking at bat.
